Scottie Thompson is unlikely to suit up for Barangay Ginebra's must-win game against TNT on Wednesday as he remains under the PBA's health and safety protocols.
Gin Kings head coach Tim Cone said the do-it-all guard, who missed their playoff for eighth against Phoenix last Saturday, will remain absent as the defending champions embark on an uphill climb to upset the twice-to-beat Tropang Giga in the no. 1 vs. no. 8 matchup of the 2021 Philippine Cup quarterfinals.
"Scottie is still out and doubtful for the TNT game," disclosed Cone in a text message. "We will remain shorthanded it seems, but the guys are in good spirits and ready to play."
Thompson is both Ginebra's second-best rebounder and playmaker and averaged 12.2 points on 45.3 percent shooting, 8.7 boards, 4.2 assists, 1.5 steals, and 1.3 blocks in 10 elimination round games. They barely made the playoffs sans the 28-year-old guard after edging out the Fuel Masters the past weekend.
His absence, of course, will leave another huge hole for the Gin Kings who are already missing big man Japeth Aguilar (MCL sprain) for the rest of the conference. Still, Cone said their focus remains on the task at hand.
The last time Ginebra faced off against TNT back on September 12, it was coach Chot Reyes and the Tropang Giga who came out victorious after the eventual top seed rolled to an 88-67 win. The Gin Kings, naturally, are hoping for a much better result this time around as bigger stakes loom in a series where they will have to win twice in a row in order to keep their title defense alive.
"Our focus now is just preparing. We can't worry about who's not playing for us. We just roll with who we do have and move on," remarked Cone.
