The rich got richer during the past hour of signing day.
Alabama continues to roll
Devonta Smith is the second ESPN 300 wide receiver to commit to Alabama on national signing day, joining Henry Ruggs III. Smith, the nation’s No. 227 prospect, selected the Crimson Tide over offers from Florida State, LSU, Miami and Ole Miss, among others. Of the 13 ESPN 300 prospects in Louisiana, Alabama now has signed three of them, just behind LSU’s four.
Michigan adds another out of SEC country
Michigan made another statement in this class by pulling wide receiver Nico Collins out of Alabama. Collins is another ESPN 300 wide receiver (No. 21) headed to Ann Arbor, joining No. 4 wide receiver Donovan Peoples-Jones and No. 33 receiver Tarik Black.
Carr sticks with USC
Despite being committed to USC since March 2015, rumors swirled around running back Stephen Carr following official visits to Oregon and UCLA in January. Carr, however, stuck with the Trojans during a ceremony at his school, as USC locked up the ESPN 300's No. 30 overall prospect and No. 3 running back.
Robinson and Lemons land at Florida
Early Wednesday it looked as though ESPN 300 wide receiver James Robinson might not sign Wednesday, but the nation’s No. 70 prospect did indeed sign and gave Florida its highest-rated recruit of the 2017 class.
Robinson’s recruitment was shaken a few days ago when news broke that he was cited for marijuana possession during a January official visit to Ohio State. Reports surfaced before signing day that Florida would stop its recruitment of Robinson, the nation’s No. 11 prospect, but the Gators moved forward on the talented receiver and signed one of the top prospects left on the board. Robinson is the top-ranked in-state addition for Florida in this class.
Florida also landed ESPN 300 running back Adarius Lemons, who also had some off-field issues that needed clearing up before the Gators added him to this class. Lemons is the nation’s No. 285 overall prospect and the nation’s No. 25 running back.
Cal adds a tight end
It hasn’t been easy for new Cal coach Justin Wilcox to load up this class after taking over so late in the process, but the Golden Bears picked up former Utah tight end commit Ben Moos on signing day. Moos is the only tight end commitment for a Cal class that has a terrific quarterback leading the way in ESPN 300 pocket passer Chase Garbers.
Carousel stops for Calvin
Jamire Calvin committed to his third school this month, as the former Oregon State and Nebraska pledge signed with Washington State. The three-star wide receiver is a nice addition for Washington State, which is always in need of dynamic receivers. Calvin is receiver No. 7 for the Cougars in this class, as head coach Mike Leach is bringing in plenty of targets for ESPN 300 quarterback Connor Neville.
