Lipscomb holds on to defeat ASun champ FGCU 90-87
FORT MYERS, Fla. -- Garrison Mathews scored 23 points and Lipscomb held on to defeat Atlantic Sun champion Florida Golf Coast 90-87 on Saturday night despite blowing a 17-point second-half lead.
Kenny Cooper added 19 points, including two free throws with 10.7 seconds left, for the Bisons (19-9, 9-4), who clinched second place in the conference. Rob Marberry had 16 points.
Brandon Goodwin had 20 of his 28 points and Christian Terrell 16 of his 22 in the second half for the Eagles (20-10, 11-2), who have lost consecutive conference home games for the first time since 2011-12. Zach Johnson added 19 as FGCU cut a 17-point deficit with 6 1/2 minutes to go down to one on two occasions.
The Eagles had a 10-0 run to pull within 79-78 with 2:16 to play and Goodwin made three free throws with 14.5 seconds left to make it 88-87.
Lipscomb shot 57 percent for the game and made 11 of 13 free throws in the second half but had nine turnovers after going ahead 69-52. Mathews, a junior moved into second on the Bisons career list with 1,621 points.
FGCU turned 24 turnovers into 32 points.
