Álex Baena scores late at Espanyol as Atlético maintain pressure on Barça

Atlético Madrid substitute Álex Baena scored late to secure a 1-0 LaLiga victory at Espanyol.

The visitors were relentless in the first half, but it was the hosts who nearly broke the deadlock when Leandro Cabrera caught the crossbar late on.

Atlético replacement Marcos Llorente clipped the bar after the break before fellow substitute Julián Álvarez -- who had just been denied -- teed up Baena for the 89th-minute winner.

There was an early chance for Juventus loanee Jonathan David, who struck just over the crossbar in the sixth minute.

Roberto Fernández tried to nod the hosts in front before David came even closer from the right, but Ángel Fortuño was alert, sticking an arm out to deny the Canada striker.

The hosts' best chance of the first half came late on, when Cabrera rushed forward to meet a loose ball from a cross, bending it towards Jan Oblak, who rose to meet it, but the Uruguayan's effort clipped the bar.

The Espanyol keeper tipped over another late effort from Álvarez, who then earned the assist for the winner from a squared pass to Baena.

Her curled it stylishly into the top corner with one minute remaining in normal time, and a stoppage-time save by Jan Oblak from a Marcos Fernández effort preserved all three points.
