Queen of the South striker Derek Lyle recorded the first goal of the new Scottish Championship season as his seventh-minute strike set up a comfortable 2-0 win against Alloa. The home side bagged their early lead when Lyle finished smartly from the centre of penalty area, prompting the Palmerston Park fans to sing "We are top of the league!"Their euphoria was doubled when Gavin Reilly extended the advantage not long before the interval following a quick breakaway, the striker scoring with a left-foot drive into the top corner from Iain Russell's neat pass. The second half became a procession as some gusty defending by Jim McIntyre's men ensured Alloa would not eat into their advantage.
