Western Sydney five points clear after win against Newcastle Jets

Western Sydney Wanderers stormed five points clear at the top of the A-League after a 2-0 win over Newcastle Jets on Christmas Eve.

The opener came in first-half injury time when Alberto Aguilar was left unmarked from a Scott Jamieson free kick. Aguilar's header lacked power but goalkeeper Mark Birighitti couldn't keep it out.

The game was effectively over 20 minutes from time when Western Sydney doubled their advantage against the out-of-form Jets.

Former Jets player Mark Bridge scored for the fifth game in a row shortly after Birighitti had kept out an effort from Dario Vidosic.

Western Sydney are now five points ahead of Brisbane Roar, who are next in action against Melbourne City on Sunday.
