Forward Sophia Smith led the charge for the Portland Thorns, netting two first-half goals in a 2-0 victory over the Chicago Red Stars on Saturday at SeatGeek Stadium. 

Smith opened the scoring in the 10th minute with a right-footed shot from the left side of the box, assisted by Hina Sugita. She doubled her tally and sealed the game for Portland in the 26th minute with another right-footed effort from inside the box, this time set up by Christine Sinclair.

Chicago had its chances late but failed to convert any into goals. Mallory Swanson, who hit the bar early in the match, had two attempts in stoppage time saved by Thorns keeper Shelby Hogan.
