Shumaker's homer powers Florida past Georgia Tech 5-2


Taylor Shumaker homered and drove in two runs to lead the Florida Gators to a 5-2 victory over the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets at Pressly Softball Stadium in the Gainesville Regional of the NCAA softball tournament Sunday. Georgia Tech has been eliminated and Florida will advance to super regionals. 

Shumaker finished 2-for-3 at the plate for the Gators (51-10). Townsen Thomas also had a productive day, going 2-for-4 with two RBIs, while Ella Wesolowski added an RBI. In the circle, Keagan Rothrock was dominant, pitching a complete game. She allowed just one hit and two earned runs over seven innings, striking out three and walking five to secure the win.

All of Georgia Tech's (32-29) offense came from a single swing of the bat. Addison Leschber delivered a two-run double in the sixth inning, finishing 1-for-3. The Yellow Jackets were held to just one hit for the entire game. Starting pitcher Madalyn Johnson worked 2⅔ innings, allowing four earned runs on five hits. Sydnie Watts pitched 3⅓ innings in relief, giving up one earned run.

Florida built its lead early, scoring in each of the first four innings. Thomas drove in the first run with a groundout in the bottom of the first. In the second, Shumaker launched a two-run homer to left center, making the score 3-0. The Gators added another run in the third on Wesolowski's RBI groundout and capped their scoring in the fourth with an RBI single from Thomas to take a 5-0 lead. Georgia Tech broke the shutout in the top of the sixth on Leschber's double, but could not complete the comeback.
