Hapoel have happy ending

Hapoel Tel Aviv ended their fruitless Europa League campaign in style with a 2-0 win over Academica.
Neither side could progress any further in the tournament after managing just one win between them before this game, with Plzen and Atletico Madrid already certain of advancing from Group B.
The hosts had previously taken only a solitary point from their five games, but gave a 12,000 crowd something to cheer with goals from substitutes Victor Mare and Hanan Maman.
Academica still finished third in the group on five points, although manager Pedro Emanuel saw his side fail to continue their proud record of having scored in every game.
Chances were hard to come by in the early stages with Santos Nivaldo trying his luck from distance for the visitors on 11 minutes, only to fire wide.
Hapoel took some time to get into their stride before creating their first serious chance on 29 minutes.
Salim Toama's left-footed free-kick was tipped over the bar by Academica goalkeeper Romuald Peiser and from the resulting corner from the same player, Peiser was forced to punch clear to avert the danger.
Academica missed a good chance to go in front on 37 minutes when Arnaldo Edinho headed wide from 12 yards out, while Tomas Marinho fired over from a similar distance with the first effort of the second period.
The deadlock was finally broken in the 57th minute when Mare, who had only been on the pitch for 10 minutes, turned the ball home from six yards following a cross from Gil Vermouth.
And it was another substitute who sealed the win after 80 minutes.
Maman had also only been on the pitch for around 10 minutes when he got on the end of Mare's header back across goal to nod home from 12 yards.

            Plzen through despite draw

Viktoria Plzen booked their place in the Europa League knockout stage, despite conceding a late equaliser in a 1-1 draw at Academica.
Pavel Horvath's penalty in the 55th minute looked set to earn the Czechs a deserved win, only for Edinho to net a spot-kick of his own two minutes from time.
The draw was still enough to send Plzen through and Academica out, though, as it moved the visitors five points clear of their third-placed opponents in Group B.
The hosts started brightly and Alexandre Silva Cleyton's right-footed shot from 12 yards was superbly saved with his feet by goalkeeper Matus Kozacik.
Both sides appeared content to try their luck from range, with Academica's John Ogu and Plzen's Horvath having shots from well outside the area saved.
There was little entertainment on offer in an uninspiring first half, but it threatened to come to life in the closing moments.
Ogu's drilled effort from the left side was parried impressively by Kozacik, while at the other end Ricardo Nunes pushed away a Vladimar Darida effort from inside the area.
The opening goal, when it arrived, came from the penalty spot.
Manuel Joao Dias fouled David Stipek and Horvath stepped up to slot the spot-kick low into the right corner.
The Czech side almost made it two in the 65th minute when Vladimar Darida met Radim Reznik only to see his shot denied by the feet of Nunes.
The visitors continued to create chances and again Nunes had to be alert, this time to parry a brilliant curling free-kick from Vaclav Prochazka.
The Portuguese were handed a way back into the match at the death when Marian Cisovsky fouled Salim Cisse in the area and Edinho levelled coolly from the spot, but it was not enough to prevent them going out.

                Atletico taught lesson by Academica

Academica snapped Atletico Madrid's 16-game winning run in European competitions thanks to a goal either side of half-time by Wilson Eduardo.
Diego Simeone made nine changes from the side that lost for the first time this season at Valencia on Saturday and he finally paid for resting his stars in the Europa League as the Portuguese side taught the holders a lesson in taking their chances.
Eduardo pounced on Marinho's excellent ball in to slide past Sergio Asenjo on 28 minutes and the same player sealed the points from the penalty spot 21 minutes from time after Jorge Pulido had brought down Salim Cisse.
Victory keeps Academica's hopes of qualification alive as they move on to four points, whilst Viktoria Plzen and Atletico continue to lead Group B on nine.
Despite making so many changes it was Atleti that had the better of the early stages with Raul Garcia first to threaten but his effort at the end of a flowing move involving Koke and Adrian was bravely deflected over by Joao Real.
The home side then went ahead midway through the half as Silvio was caught sleeping at the back post and Eduardo nipped in front of his man to calmly steer the ball beyond Asenjo.
Atleti started brightly again after the break and Ricardo had to produce a fine save to turn away Koke's effort from the edge of the area before substitute Pedro Martin had appeals from a penalty turned down.
Emre Belozoglu and Garcia saw further efforts fly just off target but the game was settled on 69 minutes when Pulido naively dived in on Cisse inside the area and Eduardo sent Asenjo the wrong way from the resulting spot-kick.

                    Atletico maintain winning run

Atletico Madrid extended their winning run in UEFA competitions to 16 games with a comfortable 2-1 victory over Academica thanks to goals from Diego Costa and Emre Belozoglu.
Adrian Lopez had spurned the best chance of a largely uneventful first half but the holders went in front just two minutes after the restart when Costa hooked in Tiago's flick-on from Gabi's corner.
The goal brought the Portuguese side out of their shell a little but any hope they had of heading back across the Iberian border with a point were extinguished 23 minutes from time when Emre curled a sumptuous free-kick into the top corner and, despite a late consolation goal from Salim Cisse, Atleti saw out the final few minutes with relative ease.
Diego Simeone's men have now also recorded 11 consecutive victories in all competitions stretching back to the opening day of the season and they almost certainly ensured their place in Europe after Christmas with a competent display despite resting six first-team regulars.
The most notable absentee was Radamel Falcao and had the Colombian been on the field Atleti would surely have been ahead inside two minutes. Koke retrieved a ball wide on the right and after his driven cross was missed on the stretch by Costa, Adrian Lopez could not turn the ball home at the back post.
Sergio Asenjo was then forced into a routine save to deny Edinho on a rare dangerous counter-attack by the visitors and Atleti were restricted to efforts from range for the remainder of the half.
Koke tested Ricardo from fully 30 yards with a shot that the keeper parried away to safety before Emre went even closer with a bending effort that whistled just past the post.
However, for all their good work in the first half, Academica were quickly undone in the second by some shocking marking as Costa was left in acres of space from a corner on the right to volley home his third goal of the season.
The Brazilian was denied a second five minutes later as Ricardo produced a fine double save to beat away his fierce effort and get back on his feet to smother Adrian's header from the rebound.
Yet the game seemed safe for the Spaniards when Emre curled the most beautifully precise free-kick into the top corner midway through the half.
However, back came Academica in the final quarter and after Asenjo had made a smart save to turn away Cleyton's free-kick, they did get a goal back from another set-piece as Cisse headed home unmarked inside the area.
Costa should have sealed the points when he headed wide from six yards moments later but it mattered little as despite a late aerial bombardment, Atleti held on to retain their three-point advantage over Viktoria Plzen at the top of Group B.
Academica remain rooted to the bottom of the group alongside Hapoel Tel-Aviv with just a solitary point to their name so far.

                        Damari dashes Academica's hopes

Omer Damari's stoppage-time equaliser for Hapoel Tel-Aviv ended Academica's dreams of their first European win in more than 40 years in their 1-1 draw.
Salim Cisse looked to have earned the Portuguese side their first win in European competition since their 2-0 victory over FC Magdeburg in 1969 when he scored from close range just after the break.
However, Damari ruined the celebrations when he levelled the scores in the last action of the game with a header from the middle of the area as the Israeli side snatched a draw in their 100th match in UEFA competition.
Both teams had several chances and Academica goalkeeper Nunes Ricardo dealt with his first real test of the evening early on when he blocked Toto Tamuz's close-range shot with his feet, before defender Reiner Ferreira saw his strike at the other end blocked by Walid Badir.
Tamuz tested Ricardo again but the Portuguese keeper punched clear, with Bruno China clearing the resulting corner taken by Gil Vermouth.
Joao Dias then forced a save from Hapoel keeper Edel Apoula as the first half drew to a close with neither side able to break the deadlock.
However, things changed soon after the interval when Cisse put the home side in front almost immediately with a close-range strike.
The forward anticipated Tomas Marinho's ball from the right wing and slid the ball home from the middle of the penalty area.
Academia very nearly went 2-0 up five minutes later when Ricardo's long ball found Cleyton, whose drilled header hit the bar.
The hosts were in the ascendancy and were unlucky to not extend their lead when Wilson Eduardo's drilled header was punched clear by Apoula, before Marinho's 20-yard strike hit the post.
However, it was Hapoel who scored, with Damari's header deep into injury time snatching a draw for his side.

Academica suffered a torrid return to European football after a 40-year absence as Viktoria Plzen swept aside any hopes of an upset with a 3-1 victory.
Academica, shock winners of the Portuguese Cup over Sporting Lisbon last season, had stunned their Czech hosts by taking the lead in the Strunc Park stadium through Wilson Eduardo in the Europa League Group B match and holding on until the break.
Plzen had enjoyed the lion's share of possession and chances, however, and that dominance finally told as they ran away with the match in the second half with goals from Pavel Horvath, Michal Duris and Frantisek Rajtoral.
Academica had withstood some early pressure before Eduardo scored with the visitors' first real opportunity of the match.
Young Guinean forward Salim Cisse broke down the left and the 19-year-old's cross was turned in by the 22-year-old Eduardo from close range.
Plzen hit the woodwork to increase home frustrations at the break but it was a different story in the second half.
Veteran skipper Horvath took only two minutes of the second period to bring the scores level with a header from Vladimir Darida's corner.
Just before the hour-mark, Slovakian forward Duris made it 2-1 with a powerful header at the near post from David Limbersky's ball.
Blond-haired winger Rajtoral wrapped it up for the home side with the third header of the match, nodding home Marek Hanousek's floated cross to secure the Czechs all three points.
