Ateneo's Tab Baldwin remains in hospital; fatigue, stress likely culprits

Ateneo Blue Eagles head coach Tab Baldwin remains confined in an intensive care unit after being rushed to the hospital Friday evening due to overfatigue.

The 61-year-old Baldwin was brought to the Cardinal Santos Medical Center in San Juan after feeling unwell following Ateneo's practice.

However, Ateneo team manager Christopher "Epok" Quimpo explained that Baldwin's ICU stay is mere precaution and explained that the coach has been dealing with a heavy schedule handling the Blue Eagles and Gilas Pilipinas as its program director.

Baldwin is also a member of Bong Ravena's staff as an assistant coach for the TNT KaTropa.

"He suddenly felt really weak, so we had to rush him to the hospital," recalled Quimpo. "He was on his way to the MRI [Saturday] morning, I think he was cleared but the stress level was really a big factor."

He added that a battery of tests is still being conducted to rule out any possibility of a mild stroke.

To prevent more stress, Baldwin turned off his phone and is not accepting visitors. If things go well, Baldwin could be discharged as early as next week.

Following his possible release, the veteran coach will return to man the sidelines of the Blue Eagles in its upcoming tournaments starting with the Champions' League in the second week of March.
