Greg Slaughter announces break from basketball after contract expires

Greg Slaughter's time with Barangay Ginebra may have come to a close.

In an Instagram post Saturday, the 31-year-old big man said he has decided to "take a break" after his contract with the Gin Kings expired.

"Six years, four championships, a lifetime of experiences and memories. It has been a fun ride with this team," Slaughter wrote.

"I will be forever proud to have played for Ginebra, a dream of mine that came true when they drafted me in 2013."

The first overall pick in 2013, Slaughter played a big part in the team's successes in the past decade and established himself along the way with five All-Star citations and one Best Player of the Conference award in 2017.

Six years, four championships, a lifetime of experiences and memories. It's been a fun ride being with this team. I will forever be proud to have played for Ginebra, a dream of mine that came true when they drafted me in 2013. With that, now that my contract has expired, I've decided to take a break to be able to work on myself in all aspects. I may not know what the future holds, but one thing is for sure, the best is yet to come! Thank you first and foremost to SMC and Boss RSA, and the rest of the management, Coach Tim and coaching staff, my teammates, and the entire Ginebra community. To the best fans in the world - I can't thank you enough for all the support you have shown me throughout the years. I will forever be grateful! #NSD

He missed the team's 2016 Governors' Cup championship - Ginebra's first title in eight years - as he recovered from a torn ACL, but was a key player in the Gin King's successful title defense a year later.

Slaughter, however, has been the subject of trade rumors in the offseason even after he won his recent title with Ginebra in the 2019 PBA Governors' Cup, where his side dispatched the Meralco Bolts in five games.

"With that, now that my contract has expired, I've decided to take a break to be able to work on myself in all aspects," he continued.

"I may not know what the future holds, but one thing is for sure, the best is yet to come!"

Slaughter averaged 9.6 points 6.4 rebounds and 1.0 assists in 49 games and 26 starts last year.

Ginebra coach Tim Cone, who is currently out of town, told ESPN5.com that he doesn't have any updates on Slaughter.

"We plan to speak with him and his agent over the next couple of days," he said in a text message.
