MONTE CARLO, Monaco -- Daniel Ricciardo led second practice for the Monaco Grand Prix as the circuit barriers claimed four more victims during the afternoon session.
Ricciardo's time was set on a set of ultra-soft tyres and was 0.606s quicker than the fastest Mercedes of Lewis Hamilton on the same compound. However, Mercedes appeared to be focused on long runs on the ultra-soft tyres, with Nico Rosberg completing 28 laps on a single set -- over a third of a race distance -- hinting at a one-stop strategy if the race is dry on Sunday.
Nico Rosberg was over 0.3s off Hamilton, but both Mercedes are expected to focus on one-lap pace in final practice after only finding marginal improvements between first and second practice on Thursday. Max Verstappen was fourth fastest, 1.208s off his team-mate, but a small amount of that gap may be because he is not running the upgraded Renault power unit that Ricciardo has this weekend. Either way, Red Bull's pace should not be ruled out on a circuit that rewards a good chassis and masks a lack of power.
Romain Grosjean, Rio Haryanto, Sebastian Vettel and Kevin Magnussen all made contact with the Armco during the session. Grosjean's accident came at the notoriously tricky exit of the tunnel as his Haas snapped sideways under braking and clouted both right wheels against the barrier. He managed to make it back to the pits and the car was repaired by the second half of the session in order to complete 23 laps in total.
Haryanto's accident was at the same part of the circuit but he came off much worse. Like Grosjean, his car snapped to the right under braking but he overcorrected the slide and pirouetted 180 degrees before hitting the barriers hard on the left. The accident left his Manor with severely damaged suspension, but the Indonesian was unhurt.
Vettel lost the rear of his Ferrari on entry to Mirabeau, spinning him through 180 degrees and causing light damage to his rear wing as he made contact with the barriers. The team was able to get his car back on track only for him to glance the barrier with his left rear tyre at Ste Devote in the final ten minutes of the session.
Magnussen's accident came at the final corner after he locked a front wheel under braking and understeered into the barrier. It damaged his front wing, giving the Renault team another repair job after Jolyon Palmer his the barriers in FP1.
Behind the Red Bulls was the Toro Rosso's of Daniil Kvyat and Carlos Sainz ahead of Kimi Raikkonen. Sergio Perez finished ahead of Vettel in the other Ferrari, which looks to be struggling for balance through the tight and twisty street circuit.
Jenson Button and Fernando Alonso finished either side of Force India's Nico Hulkenberg, with McLaren just 0.3s off Ferrari. Esteban Gutierrez recovered from his FP1 stoppage to fiish 13th, ahead of Valtteri Bottas and Haas teammate Grosjean.
Felipe Massa, who emerged late due to repair work following his FP1 shunt, finished 16th and accumulated a healthy 47 laps. Magnussen was 17th, ahead of Marcus Ericsson, Jolyon Palmer and Felipe Nasr. Despite only completing ten laps Rio Haryanto won the battle of the Manors against rookie Pascal Wehrlein, racing around the principality for the first time in his career.
