From Wednesday night ...
Heroes
Sam Bennett: The Flames rookie had a night to remember, scoring four goals in a 6-0 rout of the Florida Panthers. It was the second straight game in which Bennett scored a goal, following an 18-game stretch during which he had no goals and one assist. That outburst has lifted Bennett into a tie for sixth among rookie scorers:
There are now nine rookies with at least 10 goals (add Robby Fabbri to those included in the points leaders) just past the midway point of the NHL season. The post-lockout 2005-2006 season, when there were 11, was the last campaign in which there were more than nine rookies to finish with at least 20 goals.
Joonas Korpisalo: The 21-year-old Blue Jackets rookie, pressed into playing time due to injuries, stopped 41 of 42 shots in a 3-1 win at Toronto. He has a .901 save percentage in seven starts for the Blue Jackets, but the 2012 third-round pick had a .918 save percentage in 13 AHL games before he was summoned to Columbus.
Claude Giroux and Jakub Voracek: Philadelphia's big guns were firing against Boston, involved in all three goals during a 3-2 Flyers victory. Giroux had three assists, emerging from a slump that saw him score two points in the previous 10 games. Voracek is rallying from his slow start and after a goal and two assists against the Bruins, he has 14 points (4 G, 10 A) in the past 12 games.
Zeroes
Zdeno Chara: While he remains a positive overall contributor for the Bruins, the Bruins vet had a tough night at Philadelphia, on the ice and part of the play in all three goals against in a 3-2 loss to the Flyers.
Alex Petrovic: The Panthers blueliner was torched by the Flames, on the ice for by on for four goals against, including Sam Bennett's highlight-reel fourth of the game, in a 6-0 loss at Calgary.
Roberto Luongo: The Panthers had reaped the rewards of outstanding goaltending during their recent winning streak, but that didn't continue Wednesday in Calgary, as Luongo allowed four goals on 15 shots in a 6-0 loss to the Flames.
Vital signs
David Savard: The Columbus defenseman suffered an upper-body injury and played just 8:03 at Toronto. The Blue Jackets also lost defenseman Kevin Connauton on waivers (to Arizona) Wednesday, so that may create an opening for Dalton Prout to get back into the lineup.
David Pastrnak: The second-year Bruins winger was sidelined with an upper-body injury, missing Boston's loss in Philadelphia.
Ryan Getzlaf: Anaheim's star center was benched after a turnover that led to a Senators goal, playing 13:09 -- his lowest in a game since Jan. 11, 2014 -- against Ottawa and, while he recorded an assist for the third consecutive game, Getzlaf finished with team-worst possession stats (8 for, 13 against, 38.1 SAT%).
Firsts
Shea Theodore: Getzlaf's assist set up Theodore for his first NHL goal in his eighth NHL game. The 2013 first-round pick had 16 points (4 G, 12 A) and was minus-6 in 27 AHL games before getting called up.
Short shifts
Ducks LW Carl Hagelin put up a goal and an assist against Ottawa, matching his production from the previous 16 games ... Ducks RW Jakob Silfverberg had a goal and an assist, with 11 shot attempts (7 SOG), against Ottawa. He has four points (1 G, 3 A) in the past three games after managing four points (3 G, 1 A) in the previous 28 games. It's been an abysmal season for Flames G Jonas Hiller, but he did stop all 15 shots he faced for a shutout against Florida, raising his save percentage to .870 in 11 games ... Ducks G Frederik Andersen stopped 24 of 25 shots in a 4-1 win over Ottawa, giving him a .927 save percentage in his past five games.
