While Son Heung-min once again delivered on cue with a last-gasp equaliser in normal time to push the Asian Cup final into extra time, South Korea still went down 2-1 after James Troisi netted a 105th-minute winner for Australia at the Stadium Australia in Sydney.
Player ratings (1-10; 10 = best. Players introduced after 70 minutes get no rating)
GK Kim Jin-hyeon, 6 -- Didn't have too much to do, but at times Kim's distribution was questionable. Saved brilliantly in the ninth minute of extra time, but couldn't have done much about the goals.
DF Cha Du-ri, 7 -- Showed tremendous industry getting up and back. Hardly put a foot wrong, played a string of great lofted balls down the wing, and was an inspiring presence in extra-time.
DF Kwak Tae-hwi, 5.5 -- Handled himself reasonably well in the physical battle with Tim Cahill. Showed great composure and leadership at the back, but missed a header in the 23rd minute that would come to haunt his team.
DF Kim Young-gwon, 6 -- Generally tidy, screened his keeper well and alongside Kwak helped keep Cahill on a leash.
DF Kim Jin-su, 7 -- Korea's standout defender at the tournament, excellent in defence, and a handful getting forward. Showed himself up for the fight and tried to spur his side on. Beaten by Juric for the match-winning cross, but it would be harsh to call it a defensive error.
MF Ki Sung-yueng, 7 -- Led his side capably from midfield, dictated the tempo of Korea's passing and ensured Milligan and Luongo weren't able to play comfortably forward. Needed to show better drive in extra-time as his side became increasingly stagnant chasing the game.
MF Jang Hyun-soo, 6 -- Worked well with the skipper, controlling the centre of the park. Not as impressive in his distribution. Was pushed up front near the end, but ran badly out of steam.
MF Park Joo-ho, 5.5 -- Sacrificed by Stielike to play in an unfamiliar left attacking midfield role, and had a far less influential performance than in previous games. Skipped past Franjic early on, but with the right-back looking suspect, needed to really test his direct opponent. 5.5
MF Nam Tae-hee, 6.5 -- Started brightly for Korea and worked excellently to find space between the lines. Faded as the match went on and was eventually substituted.
MF Son Heung-min, 8 -- Korea's brightest player, was caught very early on by a Jedinak elbow and perhaps showed the effects of this later in the game. Was at the heart of Korea's dominance late in the first half, and tracked back brilliantly to help out his defence. Took his goal brilliantly to beat Mat Ryan.
FW Lee Jeong-hyeop, 5.5 -- Ploughed a lonely furrow up front for most of the game, as Nam too often failed to support him from deeper positions. Worked tirelessly, but offered little for the Taeguk Warriors.
Substitutes
FW Lee Keun-ho, 5.5 -- Showed energy after coming on. Got absolutely clattered by Spiranovic in extra-time, but still offered a dangerous outlet down the right flank. Fluffed Korea's best chance to regain parity in the 113th minute, badly scuffing his shot.
MF Han Kook-young, 6 -- Came on to screen his defence. With Australia increasingly looking stretched in midfield he didn't have a lot to do.
DF Kim Ju-young, 6 -- Solid at the centre of defence but failed to impose himself in the physical battle with Juric.
