Jordan Fuchs joins IU hoops team

Indiana freshman tight end Jordan Fuchs has joined the school's basketball team as a forward.

The 6-foot-6, 230-pound Fuchs is eligible immediately and can play in Indiana's game Wednesday night at Maryland. He appeared in all 12 games for Indiana's football team last season and had three receptions for 31 yards and a touchdown.

Hoosiers basketball coach Tom Crean said in a statement that he has tracked Fuchs "for some time" and would have considered adding him to the roster if Fuchs hadn't suffered an injury in the football team's season finale against Purdue in November.

"We worked with him since last week, and with [football coach Kevin] Wilson's blessing, we are adding Jordan at this time," Crean said in the statement. "He has considerable basketball experience and brings size, athleticism, toughness and a tremendous competitive attitude."

Fuchs played football and basketball for Christ the King High School in Queens, New York. He had basketball scholarship offers from Iowa State, SMU, Florida and others after averaging 11.7 points and 6.4 rebounds per game as a senior.

He committed to play football at Connecticut out of high school but spent a semester at Milford Academy, a prep school in Milford, Connecticut. He later committed to play football at Rutgers before signing with Indiana in December 2013.
