Daniel Descalso sidelined several weeks with broken hand

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. -- The Colorado Rockies' veteran utility infielder Daniel Descalso will be out several weeks with a broken bone in his non-throwing hand.

Descalso was hurt Friday when he was hit on the left hand by Tom Gorzelanny's pitch in a win over Cleveland. The team announced Tuesday that an MRI revealed Descalso has an avulsion fracture, an injury that occurs when a small chunk of bone that is attached to a tendon or ligament is pulled away from the main part of the bone.

Descalso had played some shortstop with the Rockies, looking to replace Jose Reyes, who is on paid leave while he faces domestic violence charges. Descalso hit .205 in 101 games with Colorado last season and is in the final season of a two-year deal.

Manager Walt Weiss also announced that prospect Tyler Anderson will be out several weeks with a strained oblique. The left-hander was scratched from Saturday's start when he felt discomfort during warmups.
