Rohan Bopanna and Leander Paes' Rio campaign came to an early end as the pair lost 6-4, 7-6 (6) in the first round of the men's doubles to the Polish pair of Lukasz Kubot and Marci Matkowski .
For the Indian pair, it was always going to be a tough ask against a tall pair that possessed a big game. Paes and Bopanna fought hard in the first set but surprisingly, Bopanna lost his serve twice. In the second set, the Poles raised their game and their serve became near impenetrable.
Against the run of play, the Indians broke to take a 6-5 lead, but Bopanna was broken again to send the set into a tiebreak. The Poles led 4-1 but Paes and Bopanna stayed in the contest, battling to earn a set point. However, Kubot and Matkowski eventually finished the match on Bopanna's serve.
With this defeat, Paes finishes his seventh Olympics without a doubles medal. Bopanna is still in the mixed doubles event, along with Sania Mirza.
