BANTAY, Ilocos Sur -- New records were made on the second day of the 2018 Palarong Pambansa here.
National Capital Region bet Kasandra Hazel Alcantara shattered a 26-year-old record in the secondary girls shotput and snagged the gold with a heave that went as far as 11.88 meters at the University of Northern Philippines grounds.
That distance eclipsed Marites Barrios 11.20 meter-throw which she set in the 1992 edition of the multi-sport showpiece.
Jamela de Asis of Western Visayas also broke the record with an 11.29-meter distance but settled for silver. Bicol Region's Mary Jean Maloloy-on came in third with 10.61 meters.
But there were more record-setting performances during the second day of hostilities.
Francis James San Gabriel emerged on top of the secondary boys 2000-meter walk at the Quirino Stadium.
San Gabriel clocked nine minutes and 31 seconds to break the record set by Bryan Oxales of NCR (10:11.03), who settled for silver in the race with a time of 9:33.15. Soccsksragen's Peter Lachica placed third (9:56.52).
The top five finishers actually leapfrogged the previous record mark.
Over at the San Ildefonso Elemtary School, Phoebe Nicole Amistoso grabbed the gold mint and set a new mark in the secondary girls archery 40 meters.
She scored a record 326 points to narrowly beat Julie An Malinog of Caraga, who tallied 324 points. Northern Mindanao archer Zetha Cataluna copped the bronze with 310 markers (shoot off).
Meanwhile, emerging as early gold medalists in the swimming competition were Samantha Corpuz of Ilocos Region (200 long course meter freestyle elementary girls), Bicolano Julius Vasquez (200 long course meter elementary boys), and Gwyneth Cawaling of NCR (400 long course meter freestyle secondary girls).
Over at the San Vicente Gymnasium, prized Soccsksargen athlete Princess Sheryl Valdez stood the tallest as she collected five gold medals in the arnis competition.
The pint-sized arnis artist ruled the elementary girls individual single weapon, individual double weapon, individual espada y daga, synchronized single weapon events, and mixed events, respectively.
