Weightlifter Macrohon wins gold in first SEA Games stint

Kristel Macrohon gave the Philippine another gold medal after reigning supreme in the women's 71-kg division of the 30th Southeast Asian Games weightlifting competition on Wednesday at the Ninoy Aqunio Stadium.

The 23-year-old from Zamboanga lifted 93kg in the snatch and 123kg for a total of 216 kg to finish first in the event.

Vietnam's Nguyen Thi Van had a chance, but failed in her last lift at 125kg that would have inched Macrohon by a kilo.

"I'm very happy. I didn't expect to win today. My coaches told me to give it my all," said Macrohon, who participated in the SEA Games for the first time.

Macrohon was grateful for the support she received from her supporters, family, and teammates, most especially gold medalist Hidilyn Diaz.

"Thank you to all of them. [Hidilyn] told me that I can do it, to give my best," she said.

All in all, the Philippine weightlifting team bagged 2 golds, 3 silvers and 2 bronze medals in this year's edition.
