Dela Pisa gives PH another gold in gymnastics

Daniela dela Pisa clinched a gold medal for the Philippines in rhythmic gymnastics after topping the hoop event in the 30th Southeast Asian Games Saturday at the Rizal Memorial Coliseum.

The Cebuana gymnast also took home a pair of bronze medals in the ball and clubs finals.

The 16-year-old Dela Pisa worked hard to conquer the rhythmic gymnastics stage after surviving her fight against ovarian cancer when she was younger.

Dela Pisa reigned supreme in the hoop event, finishing with a score of 17.750. She bested Malaysians Izzah Amzan (16.500) and Amy Kwan (15.900).

It was Amzan's turn to come away with the gold in the ball apparatus after earning a 17.800 nod from the judges. Thailand's Nat Kulsanawong (16.300) claimed the silver, while Dela Pisa settled for bronze with a 15.600 mark.

Dela Pisa once again made it to the podium of the clubs event, placing behind gold medalist Benjaporn Limpanich (17.150) of Thailand and silver medalist Koi Sie Yan (16.900) of Malaysia.

Prior to the SEA Games, Dela Pisa bagged the individual all-around title in two European tournaments: the 2019 Liptov Cup in Slovakia and the 2019 Magic Cup Rhythmic Gymnastics in Hungary.

In the group all-around, Jean Caluscusin, Andrea Emperado, Katrina Loretizo, AJ Melyar, and Devina Sembrano earned another bronze medal for the Philippines. Malaysia and Thailand captured the gold and silver medals, respectively.

The Pinay gymnasts finished with a 17.150 mark in the 5 balls, behind Malaysia (22.650) and Thailand (21.000). They also placed third in the 3 hoops and 2 pairs of clubs with a score of 12.000, as Thailand (18.900) and Malaysia (17.400) ended up on top.
