Singapore continues SEA Games dominance, adds five swimming golds

CAPAS, Tarlac -- Singapore dominated the final day of the Southeast Asian Games swimming competition at the NCC Aquatics Center. Joseph Schooling and his teammates Zheng Wen Quah, Lionel Khoo and Darren Chua ended the 4x100 meter medley relay in style with a 3:38.63 finish, almost five seconds ahead of second-place Indonesia and third-place Vietnam.

Singapore won five golds and two silvers Monday evening, bringing their total haul to 23 gold, nine silver, and three bronze medals.

The Philippine quartet of Jerard Jacinto, James Deiparine, Jarod Hatch, and Luke Gebbie were disqualified after Hatch stopped in the middle of his race. He then rose and left the pool after the incident.

Ching Hwee Gan won the opening finals of the night in the women's 800m freestyle in 8:41.48.

Zhen Wen Quah, meanwhile, finished first in the men's 200m butterfly, tallying 1:56.61.

Ting and Jing Wen Quah had a 1-2 finish in the women's 100m butterfly, and were just within 0.09 seconds of each other. Ting finished at 59:62 seconds.

Also victorious was Jasmine Alkhaldi, who won the bronze - her eighth medal overall - with a time of 1:00.39. Remedy Rule came up next at 1:00.49.

Jonathan Tan and Tsen Wei Teong also went 1-2 for Singapore in the men's 50m freestyle, both breaking the previous SEA Games record of 22.46 ticks with tallies of 22.25, and 22.40, respectively.

Not to be outdone was Luke Gebbie of the Philippines, who came up third with 22.62.

"I think I couldn't have done [my finish] with the help of the crowd," said Gebbie.

Overall, the Philippines had a haul of one gold, six silvers, and nine bronze medals, ending a ten-year drought in swimming gold medals.

It is also a much better output than the 2017 SEA Games, where they were only able to get three silver and four bronze medals.
