Thompson, Cabagnot, Santos, Castro sign extensions with respective teams

Fast-rising Barangay Ginebra guard Scottie Thompson, along with established PBA stars Jayson Castro of TNT and San Miguel's Arwind Santos and Alex Cabagnot have all secured fresh deals with their respective teams recently.

Veteran player agent Danny Espiritu, who represents the players, said negotiations for fresh deals began months ago.

"It's been a few months since they signed new deals with their teams. So for Scottie, before his rookie maximum contract expired last August, he already signed with Ginebra," Espiritu told ESPN5 on Monday.

The 25-year-old Thompson signed a three-year extension. He is one of the hottest PBA players today, being named the 2018 PBA Commissioner's Cup Finals MVP recently while winning three league titles with the Kings during his first three seasons in the pros.

Known for his ability to secure rebounds over tall opponents, along with his ability to slash his way to the basket, Thompson eventually was named to Gilas Pilipinas, which on Monday plays host to Qatar in the FIBA World Cup Asian qualifiers.

Thompson, a former NCAA MVP, was selected fifth overall by Ginebra in the 2015 PBA Rookie Draft.

The Ginebra guard's batchmate Troy Rosario, the second overall pick in 2015, also secured a new three-year contract extension with TNT.

Terms of the contract were not revealed though.

"We told management that instead of signing an automatic extension contract just till December since the PBA season is still ongoing, why not sign them to fresh contract deals? And that's what management gave to these players," explained Espiritu.

Meanwhile, veteran stars Cabagnot and Santos still have one year left in their respective contracts, but were given separate two-year extension deals as well by SMB management.

Castro, the many-time Gilas Pilipinas guard, also has a year left in his contract and got a two-year extension as well.

"Just like Alex Cabagnot, Jayson Castro and Arwind got their two-year extension deals also, which means they now have three years with their own teams. So their contracts will expire by 2021," he said.

Santos will be 40 by the time his contract expires in August 2021, while Cabagnot will be 38.

Castro, on the other hand, will be 35.

Meanwhile, 14-year veteran Willy Wilson, one of the senior citizens in the PBA, also got a one-year extension with Phoenix.
