MOSCOW -- India's Viswanathan Anand lost to his former world championship challenger Vladimir Kramnik of Russia in the fourth round of Tal Memorial International chess tournament.
Kramnik got a small advantage in the middle game and nurtured it well when Anand did not find the best response. The game ended with a tactical masterstroke that left Anand defenceless.
With five rounds still remaining, Anish Giri of the Netherlands is now firmly ahead on 3.5 points out of a possible four while Ian Nepomniachtchi (Russia) is half a point behind. Li Chao of China is third with 2.5 points --- a half point clear of the quartet of Shakhriyar Mamedyarov (Azerbaijan), Kramnik, Levon Aronian (Armenia) and Anand who all share the fourth spot now.
