Selangor aim to end decade long Malaysia Cup drought to win 33rd title

Defender Robbie Cornthwaite says that Selangor are determined to end the club's decade-long Malaysia Cup drought after knocking out two time defending champions Pahang.

Selangor will face underdogs Kedah in Saturday's Malaysia Cup final after a 2-0 victory in Sunday night's semifinal second leg. It came after the two sides had drawn 0-0 in Kuantan last Wednesday night.

"It was probably the most difficult semifinal opposition you could get," Cornthwaite told ESPN FC.

"Pahang are Malaysia Cup specialists and to be able to keep two clean sheets against them with the amazing strike force they have shows how well we battled and fought as a team."

The Red Giants are on course to win their record 33rd Malaysia Cup and their first since 2005.

Their last silverware came five years ago when they clinched a second consecutive Malaysia Super League title in 2010 under K. Devan.

"To win the semifinal in front of so many Selangor fans was pretty special," Cornthwaite said.

"I know the history of Selangor and how proud all the fans are. It's been far too long between trophies and we want to change that on Saturday."

Selangor's most recent Malaysia Cup final was in 2008 when they lost 3-2 to Kedah. That was the last of four Malaysia Cup triumphs for Kedah, who are 2015 Malaysia Premier League champions.

Cornthwaite added: "Finals don't come around very often and as you get a bit older you want to seize every opportunity you have to win something. It won't be easy but this team we have is something special."

Saturday's final will be held at Shah Alam Stadium where coach Mehmet Durakovic won three consecutive Malaysia Cups as Selangor captain between 1995-97.

Kedah defeated Felda United 4-3 on aggregate in their semifinal against Felda United after a 2-1 win in Alor Setar on Sunday night.

Felda had eliminated Malaysia Super League champions Johor Darul Ta'zim in the quarterfinals.
