Buriram United sealed a domestic treble in style as they defeated rivals Muang Thong United 3-1 in the Thai FA Cup final in Bangkok on Saturday.
Goals from Andres Tunez, Go Seul-Ki and Jakkaphan Kaewprom put the Thai Premier League (TPL) champions in control before a late Mario Gjurovski strike salvaged some pride for the Kirins.
The victory marked the perfect end to the year for the team from the North East as they completed a clean sweep of the domestic titles without losing a single match. For Muang Thong, it was a disappointing end to a season in which they had matched Buriram until the crucial final stages.
Buriram started the game brightly and Diogo Luis Santo tested Muang Thong's goalkeeper Kawin Thamsatchanan in just the second minute when he met Gilberto Macena's cross with a looping header. But the Thailand keeper tipped the ball over to keep out 2015's top scorer.
The TPL champions had the better of the opening stages, while Muang Thong struggled to create chances.
The Thunder Castle's skipper Suchao Nutnum came close in the 18th minute when he cut in from the right wing and struck a low left-footed shot from 20 yards into the side netting.
But the Kirins came alive in the 23rd minute when fine play from Teerasil Dangda released Cleiton Silva. The Brazilian striker had a clear view of the goal but scuffed his shot and Koravit Namwiset got back to clear.
Normal service resumed minutes later when Buriram forced Kawin into another fine save. Theerathon Bunmathan worked a one-two with Diogo on the left and the Thail captain's powerful shot was pushed out by Kawin.
Muang Thong's keeper was called into action again just before the half-hour mark. Macena made a fine run down the left and his cut-back from the bye-line was intercepted by Thitipan Puangchan, whose attempted clearance was heading into his own goal until Kawin reacted quickly to block.
The one-way traffic towards the Muang Thong goal continued when Anawin Jujeen struck a curling shot from near the left touchline and Kawin tipped over.
And the pressure finally paid off in the 43rd minute as Buriram were awarded a penalty when Diogo went down after a rash challenge from Piyaphon Phanichakul. Venezuelan international defender Tunez slotted home the spot-kick to give Alexandre Gama's side a deserved lead going into the break.
Muang Thong started the second half with a greater sense of purpose but Buriram soon took control again and Go added a second goal after an incredible passage of play.
First, Macena went through on goal and was denied by a last-ditch challenge from Piyaphon. From the resulting corner, the ball broke to Theerathon on the right and his low cross was hacked wide by Piyaphon again. Theerathon's corner then found Diogo, whose powerful header was kept out of the net by a combination of goalkeeper and defender.
Finally, the ball was fed to Diogo who had drifted wide and his teasing cross was met by Go and his header looped over Kawin, leaving the TPL runners up with a mountain to climb.
The Kirins immediately had a chance to pull one back but Silva fluffed his lines again by heading well wide after Gjurovski's free kick found him in space 12 yards from goal.
And Buriram killed off their opponents in the 71st minute with a wonderful strike from Jakkaphan. The tireless Macena made a run down the right and attempted to find Go with his cutback. The ball eluded the South Korean but found its way to Jakkaphan at the edge of the box to the left of goal. The midfielder stepped inside and curled a superb right-foot shot beyond Kawin's despairing dive.
Muang Thong refused to give up and they were furious when they were denied a penalty with just over 10 minutes remaining. After an incredible scramble in the Buriram box, Piyaphon's effort appeared to be handled on the line by Theerathon.
But the Kirins pulled a goal back in the 81st minute when Gjurovski netted with an angled left-foot shot.
Diogo had an excellent chance to add a fourth but failed to make a clean connection with Narubadin Weerawatnodom's cross when he seemed certain to score.
And to end Muang Thong's day on a sour note, Gjurovski was sent off for a second yellow in the dying moments after a push on Diogo. The Macedonian's furious response to the red card as he shouted in the referee's face will no doubt lead to further action.
But nothing could take the shine off the day for the Buriram fans as they celebrated their side's incredible season and hailed their Invincibles.
