One of Singapore's most feared strikers, Indra Sahdan, has returned to his roots by joining Geylang International for the upcoming S.League season.
Having spent most of this season on the Tampines Rovers' bench, the veteran striker will head into his 21st season as a professional hoping to add to his 181-goal tally.
"Geylang always had a special place in my heart." Indra told ESPN FC. "I still think I can contribute to the team and despite my age, I am confident of imparting a thing or two to the younger players in this squad.
"I have to give a big thank you to the club management for believing in me, and their efforts to bring me to this club says a lot. I will do my best for the team in the coming season."
With Geylang's new-look roster which includes a slew of young Singapore stars like Shahfiq Ghani, Amy Recha, Safirul Sulaiman and Al-Qaasimy Rahman, Indra is particularly keen to help strike partner Sahil Suhaimi become the undisputed number one forward for the national team.
"Sahil is a good young player. He has a lot to learn though, but he can only get better in time to come," Indra said. "He has experienced international matches with Singapore in recent years and he is most definitely a key player in this squad. I'll try and see how I can help him as we go along throughout the season."
Head coach Hasrin Jailani, who is making his debut as a S.League coach in 2016, is pleased to have experienced heads like Shariff Samat, Nor Azli and now Indra on board.
He said: "We got Indra finally and I think he is definitely a boost to the team. His vast experience both locally and on the international stage will help our young squad next season.
"Indra will add that much needed guidance for the rest of the strikers in the team. And they can definitely learn a lot from him.
"We've brought him in and he is excited to join the club, where he made a name for himself. The players are also looking forward to playing alongside him and I believe we have a team that can excite fans on the pitch."
Gabriel Quak, a new signing from LionsXII, is also thrilled to have the opportunity of playing in the same team as a man he grew up watching in the S.League.
"Indra was one of my favourite players when I was younger. In my opinion, he is one of the best finishers Singapore football has ever seen," Quak said.
"To have a chance to play alongside him is something I am looking forward to. [I] cannot wait to get on the pitch with this living legend of the local game!"
As for the man himself, Indra refused to delve into his past achievements, choosing to focus on the task ahead, which is to help the Eastern giants regain their spot at the top of the S.League pile.
"We are a team and we will stick by one another throughout the season. What we [the senior players] can do is to guide them [the younger ones] during training and matches," Indra said. " These youngsters are also professional players and I am confident they will deliver what is expected of them.
"With the current squad we have, I believe we can compete with the best teams in the league. Let's take this one step at a time. Always remember, this is a marathon, not a race."
If Indra can help Sahil and Shahfiq to continue to develop their game, Geylang will be hoping go a step further than their eighth-place finish in the S.League in 2015.
