Kelantan's Indra Putra, K. Devan eye 2016 Malaysia Super League title push

Kelantan are looking to returning striker Indra Putra Mahayuddin to help revive their Malaysia Super League (MSL) fortunes in the coming season.

The 2012 treble winners flirted with relegation before finishing a disappointing ninth last year.

But the arrival of experienced coach K. Devan, along with a host of new signings, including Indra, has revived hopes that that Red Warriors will contend for honours in 2016.

Indra moves from Felda United along with striker Abdul Manaf Mamat (Terengganu), midfielder Mohd Faizal Abu Bakar and defender Muslim Ahmad (PDRM).

The 34-year-old had two previous spells with Kelantan, including the treble-winning season under coach Bojan Hodak, which included the 2012 MSL crown.

"One of the reasons I came back is because of the passionate fans," Indra told The Star.

"I have fond memories playing here in 2012 and I hope we can achieve success again."

Coach Devan says that the former national striker will provide an attacking focal point as Kelantan aim to end a trophy drought that stretches back to 2013.

He said: "Indra has the qualities and goal-scoring instincts. He is a fan favourite and has the charisma to lead the team. His return will be a huge boost in our search for success in the new season."

Kelantan have retained former Australia centre-back Jon McKain but are looking to fill their other import spots.

"We have good local players and we are going to hire three influential foreigners," Devan said. "We should be able to make our fans excited again. We still have the core of the players from the 2012 squad. And we hope Indra's return will spur them on."

Indra amassed 51 league goals in 115 appearances for Kelantan during his two previous stints. In the 2012 Malaysia Cup final, he scored the winner in extra-time that gave Kelantan a 3-2 victory over ATM FA.

Two-time champions Kelantan will aim to make a fifth Malaysia Cup final in eight years in 2016. They were runners up in the 2015 Malaysia FA Cup, losing to LionsXII in the final.
