Billy Sharp, 40, in retirement U-turn for FA Cup outing

Billy Sharp has ended his retirement, just three weeks after bringing the curtain down on his lengthy career.

The veteran striker, 40, has signed for AFC Rushden & Diamonds -- the phoenix club who formed in 2011 when Rushden & Diamonds (who Sharp scored his first professional goal for) fell apart.

Sharp is a legend at home city club Sheffield United and also played for Scunthorpe United, Doncaster Rovers, Southampton, Nottingham Forest and Leeds United -- he enjoyed a short stint in MLS before ending his career with Doncaster at the end of last season.

He scored a hat trick against Peterborough in his final game before telling Sky Sports: "I'm going to hang my boots up. I've given it a good ride. I've got a long way, got to 40."

But, after announcing his retirement in October after 299 goals, he has penned a deal to play for AFC Rushden & Diamonds.

AFC Rushden & Diamonds will play in the first round of the FA Cup for the first time on Saturday against Burton Albion but are without the suspended James Clifton, who Sharp will replace.

Chris Wilder, Sharp's former boss at Sheffield United, told the Sheffield Star: "[He] still keeps himself incredibly fit. I think he's playing a bit of paddle as well.

"I mean, there's plenty of players playing Sunday league football and playing vets football as well, isn't there? They can't give it up, and they're at charity games as well, but he obviously has a connection down there, playing for them when he went out on loan from us, when he was a young boy, when they were in the Football League."
