Fabregas told Como 'not to run' against Manchester United (0:50)

Even for a free-scoring side like Cecs Fabregas' Como, the way the goals kept coming in the Champions League on Wednesday was hard to believe.

The Serie A side, coached by former Arsenal, Barcelona and Chelsea star Fabregas, beat Lens 9-1 in the league phase to set a record for most goals on the road by any team in the competition's history and move up to fourth place in the table.

"It has been a great night for Como, for all our fans, and for many of the young players who are just starting their careers," Fabregas said after the game. "But we have to keep our feet on the ground, stay humble, and keep working hard. This is something we must always learn."

Tasos Douvikas became just the third Greek international with a Champions League hat trick, and Argentine star Nico Paz pulled the strings with a pair of assists to go along with a sublime goal to make it 3-0 in the 40th minute.

Lucas Da Cunha, Marc-Oliver Kempf, Mattia Liberali, Martin Baturina and Matteo Papaccioli also scored for Como against Lens, who are ninth place in Ligue 1.

The hat trick from Douvikas was the first by a Como player in European competition, no surprise considering this is the first season that the team from Italy's luxury resort town has ever played in any of the Champions, Europa or Conference Leagues.

The nine strikes by Como ties Bayern Munich's record for goals in a game at home or away and took their total across four Champions League games to 19 -- one behind the total two-time defending champions Paris Saint-Germain have scored so far.

"We must learn this now so we don't buy into our own hype or think that the job is already done," Fabregas added. "We have to learn to say: 'Okay, it was a good day, let's move forward and try to keep putting in good performances.'"

The eight-goal margin of victory was also a record, tying the one set by Liverpool with an 8-0 win against Besiktas in 2007 and equaled by Real Madrid with an 8-0 win over Malmo in 2015.

At home in Serie A, Como are fourth in the table on 23 points, five behind leaders Lazio after 10 games played. They play second place Inter on Sunday.
