Minnesota Twins outfielder Byron Buxton exited his club's 4-2 loss to the Athletics on Tuesday night in Sacramento, California, appearing to injure his hip in the bottom of the seventh inning.
On a triple off the bat of Henry Bolte, Buxton reached for the ball as it bounced in the outfield and walked gingerly around the grass before being met by the Twins' training staff.
Buxton, 32, has already been sent to the injured list twice this season for right hip injuries. He landed on the IL on July 7 with a strain/impingement, which forced him to miss the All-Star Game. He was activated July 20 only to be sent back to the IL on July 29 after aggravating the injury.
"I think the thing is, he's been dealing with the hip issue," Twins manager Derek Shelton said after the loss. "And I think it kind of caught when he went to stop on the ball that got hit in the gap."
Buxton was replaced by Trevor Larnach, who was 0-for-1. In his postgame media availability, Shelton said that Buxton was still being examined in the training room.
"I just felt with where he was at, I made the decision to go, 'OK, let's get him off the field,'" Shelton said. "We just need to make sure we can have a look at it."
Buxton, who was 0-for-3 batting out of the No. 2 hole, is hitting .254 this season with 25 home runs and 46 RBIs.
