WSOF grants release to Melvin Guillard

Veteran lightweight Melvin Guillard has received his release from World Series of Fighting, according to his manager Malki Kawa.

Kawa announced via social media on Thursday that WSOF had granted Guillard''s request for a release.

"I just received what I asked for from WSOF, which is the release of [Guillard]," Kawa wrote. "Should have a new home for him shortly."

Guillard, 32, fought twice under the WSOF banner in what was a highly tumultuous one-year run. He missed weight by 1.2 pounds for a lightweight bout against Gesias Cavalcante last July, which he went on to win via second-round TKO.

WSOF booked Guillard (32-14-2) to a title fight against Justin Gaethje for his second appearance in November, but he missed weight again and the bout was downgraded to a non-title fight. Guillard lost via split decision.

The Louisiana native was scheduled to fight at WSOF 20 on April 10, but promotions removed him days prior to the card after not being able to reach him.

Guillard fought almost exclusively in the UFC from 2005 through 2014. The UFC released Guillard following a loss to Michael Johnson in March 2014.
