Arik Armstead an early entry for draft

Oregon junior defensive lineman Arik Armstead will forgo his senior year and enter the NFL draft.

"After three years preparing with my teammates and coaches, I feel I'm ready to test myself at the next level," Armstead said Tuesday in a university news release. "All the support I've received from Coach [Don] Pellum and Coach [Ron] Aiken, the rest of the Oregon coaches and staff and in my academics has prepared me to make this jump."

Amstead started 13 games for the Ducks and finished the 2014 season with 46 tackles including 5.5 for a loss, 2.5 sacks and six quarterback hurries.

The junior's athleticism is going to be intriguing to scouts as he was a dual-sport athlete at Oregon prior to this football season, playing both basketball and football.

Armstead has been projected as a first-round pick by some NFL general managers.

His teammate, defensive end DeForest Buckner, announced Wednesday that he will return to Oregon for his senior season.

Buckner will lead a rebuilding defensive line during his final year with the Ducks. He finished the 2014 season with 81 tackles, including a team-high 13 tackles for a loss.

"We're obviously very excited in regards to DeForest's decision to return next year," defensive line coach Aiken said. "He is a good student-athlete as well as an outstanding football player, and we look forward to having his leadership back for another year."
