The New York Islanders have signed Logan Stanley to a one-year contract, adding the defenseman days before their season opener.
The No. 18 overall pick in 2016 by the Winnipeg Jets, Stanley, 28, was dealt to the Buffalo Sabres last season at the trade deadline. He finished the season with seven goals and 26 points, both career highs, while finishing a two-year, $2.5 million contract.
But Stanley struggled in the postseason and was scratched in Buffalo's final four games of a Round 2 loss to the Montreal Canadiens. He skated in eight playoff contests, accumulated 19 penalty minutes and finished with a minus-2 rating.
The Islanders, who have missed the playoffs the past two seasons and brought in Peter DeBoer as their new head coach, open the regular season Wednesday at the Toronto Maple Leafs.
A left-shot defenseman who is a native of Kitchener, Ontario, Stanley has international experience playing for Team Canada. In 2016, he played in the world junior championships, when Canada finished fourth.
