Scarlets ignite Euro campaign with bonus-point win at Treviso

Scarlets kept their hopes alive of reaching a first European Champions Cup quarterfinal since 2007 with a 31-12 victory over Benetton Treviso.

Gareth Davies scored two of Scarlets' four tries at the Stadio Comunale di Monigo as they secured a second bonus-point victory against their PRO14 rivals in Pool 5.

The success takes Scarlets to 12 points, with games away to Bath and at home to Toulon still to come.

The Welsh regional team's travel arrangements hit trouble when an air traffic controllers' strike in Italy led to their original flight on Friday being cancelled and they were forced to charter a plane.

It did not slow them down on the pitch, though.

Leigh Halfpenny, who scored 11 points, landed an early penalty and then put in a neat kick behind the home defensive line to set-up the first of three first-half tries.

Benetton were increasingly susceptible to chip kicks and Halfpenny took full advantage with an effort that found centre Paul Asquith, who dived to catch the bouncing ball before somehow managing to flick a pass to wing Johnny McNicholl, who crossed in the corner.

Halfpenny converted off the touchline to stretch the lead to 10-0 in 14 minutes.

The hosts lost number eight Nasi Manu to an ankle injury after only quarter-of-an-hour and five minutes later prop Federico Zani picked up a yellow card.

That gave the visitors the chance to strike and McNicholl repaid the favour to Asquith as he regathered a neat box kick and sent his centre racing to the try line.

The power of the Scarlets pack paved the way for the first of two tries from Welsh scrum half Davies in a five-minute purple patch either side of the break as the bonus-point was bagged within 44 minutes.

Will Boyde set up Davies for a side-stepping run for his first on the stroke of half-time and then he simply converted some great phase play with another close-range effort four minutes after the restart.

His second score came moments after Benetton wing Angelo Esposito had been sent to the sin-bin for slapping a box kick away from Steff Evans and once against Scarlets made their extra-man count.

From there on in it was just a question of holding on to their lead and emptying the bench.

Ian McKinley missed a penalty for Benetton before wing Monty Ioane saved their blushes with a brace of tries in the final three minutes.
