Yulo closes SEA Games stint with seven medals

Carlos Yulo clinched three silver medals on the last day of the men's artistic gymnastics competition of the 30th Southeast Asian Games Wednesday at the Rizal Memorial Coliseum.

The 19-year-old world champion capped off his maiden campaign in the regional meet with seven medals: double gold in floor exercise and individual all-around, and five silvers in pommel horse, still rings, vault, parallel bars, and horizontal bar.

Yulo settled for second place in the vault final after getting a 14.700 mark, 0.034 lower than the score of eventual champion Agus Prayoko (14.734) of Indonesia.

Yulo was slapped with a -0.100 penalty after stepping outside the mat upon landing his first vault attempt. He bounced back with a cleaner execution in his equally difficult second attempt, but the earlier deduction caused the gold to slip from his hands.

Two-time vault champion Le Thanh Tung fell to third place with 14.617. Yulo also finished second in the parallel bars with a score of 14.600 (5.900 in difficulty and 8.700 in execution).

Back-to-back gold medalist Dinh Phuong Thanh defended his title following a stunning routine that tallied 14.800, highlighted by a 6.400 difficulty score.

Le bagged another bronze after scoring 14.233 in parallel bars.

Dinh, on the other hand, bagged his second gold medal in horizontal bar, beating Yulo by 0.100 in difficulty.

Yulo ended up with another silver in the last event after getting a 13.667 mark. Dinh (13.767) rose to the top and improved from his runner-up finish two years ago.

Singapore's Xong Sean Yeo completed the horizontal bar podium finishers with a score of 13.567.

Yulo emerged as the lone medalist for the Philippines in artistic gymnastics as teammates Reyland Capellan, Jan Gwynn Timbang, Mya Kalani Wilson, Cristina Onofre, and Chloe Gatlabayan failed to keep up with their opponents in their respective apparatus finals.

Capellan, former back-to-back gold medalist in floor exercise and bronze medalist in vault, missed out on the podium for the first time in three SEA Games stints.
