Bristol gained revenge for their Tetley's Bitter Cup semi-final defeat with a hard-fought defeat of Wasps, 31-25.
The first half had little to commend it apart from two tries in the final seven minutes.
Six penalties were swapped in the first 20 minutes, Alex King kicking three for Wasps and Henry Honiball doing likewise for Bristol.
Bristol flanker Matt Salter left the field with a cut after 28 minutes and he was replaced by Craig Short. The blood-bin replacement hardly covered himself in glory as he was almost instantly sin-binned for throwing a punch.
But while down to 14 men Bristol scored the first try. They had looked quite comfortable in keeping Wasps out and had forced them into playing in midfield.
A short pass was intercepted by Agustin Pichot who scooted 50 metres untouched to score.
That was down the right wing, and down the left it was Eduardo Simone who did likewise and Bristol had a 14-point half-time lead.
The second half was much better entertainment. Wasps were forced to chase the game and made a good fist of it. King, with two penalties against one from Honiball, reduced the arrears to 11.
After 60 minutes replacement Rob Henderson plunged over in the corner for Wasps' first try which was converted by Kenny Logan from the touchline.
However Wasps again shot themselves in the foot by straying offside at a free-kick. Bristol won the scrum and fed the ball out to the left wing where replacement scrum-half Gareth Baber touched down in the corner.
With 11 minutes to go King reduced the arrears to six points with his sixth penalty.
The final five minutes saw Wasps camped on the Bristol line, where they received a succession of penalties. The final whistle blew with Wasps a metre from the line, but having again made an error when King knocked on.
