Leeds staged a miraculous recovery to claim their first-ever win over Newcastle in a seesaw Zurich Premiership match at Kingston Park.
The battling Tykes fought back from 20-3 down after 35 minutes to end their seven-match losing run and leave Newcastle still looking for their first Premiership win of 2004.
It was the proverbial 'games of two halfs' as first Newcastle threatened to dominate before Leeds pulled things from the fire.
Elsewhere Northampton hung on with 14 men to hold off Saracens in a Vicarage Road thriller and reclaim third place in the Zurich Premiership table.
Saints appeared to be coasting to victory after tries from Chris Hyndman, Shane Drahm and Bruce Reihana had earned them a 22-10 lead early in the second half.
But Saracens belied their lowly position in the league table with a try apiece for Nicky Little and Robbie Kydd - and mounted a furious late assault on the Northampton line after the visitors had lost Mark Robinson to the sin-bin.
And ultimately it needed a last-gasp tackle from Oriol Ripol to bring down wing Paul Bailey within a metre of the line in the final play of the game.
Gloucester marched into the top three of the Zurich Premiership with a five-try victory over Sale, inspired by a magnificent forward performance on Saturday night.
Led by an outstanding effort from their captain Jake Boer, the hosts were comfortable and deserved winners against a Sale side depleted by international call-ups and injuries.
Despite missing their two England props Phil Vickery and Trevor Woodman, Gloucester were still far superior against a Sale pack who were physical but lacked the overall quality to seriously threaten the hosts.
Gloucester were in business by the 12th minute when lock Alex Brown collected a line-out, and the home pack drove 15metres for Boer to be awarded the score. Stand-off Duncan McRae converted from the touch line.
The hosts never looked back after that and were always in the box seat at at Kingsholm, eventually running out 38-12 winners.
Elsewhere away-day specialists Wasps stole a march on Zurich Premiership leaders Bath and condemned rock-bottom Rotherham to a record 16th straight defeat.
The below-strength champions made it eight away wins in a row and secured an all-important bonus point in the process to close the gap on the inactive leaders to just two points.
Rotherham, who have now lost to every side in the Premiership this season, trailed only 5-3 at half-time but they spent virtually the whole of the first half on the back foot and conceded three tries in a decisive 16-minute spell early in the second half.
It may not have been a Valentine's Day massacre but the Titans trailed 24-6 before claiming a couple of pushover tries which briefly set up a nerve-jangling finish and earned them only their second point of the season.
But the Titans are still hopelessly cut adrift at the foot of the table and they now take over the unwanted record of defeats at the start of a Premiership season set by Bedford four years ago.
Afterwards Wasps director of rugby Warren Gatland was beaming with delight after watching his below-strength side claim maximum points.
I'm absolutely delighted," said Gatland. "The whole objective was to come up here and get a result and to get a bonus point is a big plus.
"We watched Rotherham closely in the last two games and we knew it was going to be a difficult game."
