France produced the biggest upset of day one at the World Cup sevens turning over the fancied England side 28-14.
France raced into a 14-0 lead with tries by Julien Malzieu and Jerome Naves, before Ugo Monye and Phil Dowson pulled it back to 14-12 a couple of minutes into the second half. FFrance extended their lead through Julien Carraud before Renaud Dulin was sin bined. England took advantage of the extra man with, Geoff Appleford scoring to bring the gap back to two points.
England pushed for the winning try, but an error by Henry Paul saw Naves break away for his second to put the result beyond doubt.
Meanwhile Fiji progressed to day two unbeaten winning their final game over Canada 29-14. Sireli Bobo scored two of their five tries with others coming from talented youngster William Ryder, Semisi Naevo and Vilimoni Delasau. Canada's replied through captain Marco di Girolamo and Dave Moonlight.
New Zealand also progressed to day two unbeaten.Second half tries by Josh Blackie and Orene Ai'i ensured that defending champions overcame a committed Tongan side .
Tries by Joseph Kolokihakaufisi and Tevita Tu'ifua, the latter coming from a misplaced pass by New Zealand, were sandwiched by a try from Edwin Cocker as Tonga surprisingly led 12-7 at half-time.
