Students climb out of mud and up to second on TNC ladder

Sydney University has leapfrogged Northern Suburbs on the Tooheys New Cup ladder thanks to its 29-nil shutout of the Shoremen in atrocious conditions at University Oval.

The now second-placed Students crossed for four second half tries after taking a 3-nil lead into half time, and twice survived being reduced to 14 men in the second half to keep yet another clean sheet.

The win is Uni's third to nil in succession, following on from an 87-0 defeat of West Harbour in round six and a 29-0 win over Parramatta a week ago.

The match struggled for momentum due to the boggy conditions, two missed penalty attempts from Uni flyhalf Daniel Halangahu the closest the small crowd in attendance got to a highlight in the first half an hour.

Uni found the tryline in the 30th and 37th minutes but were unable to open their account due to poor handling in the in goal, but eventually Halangahu piloted a penalty over the cross bar in the 38th minute of the match to put Uni out to a 3-nil half time lead.

Halangahu was in the thick of the action again shortly after the break, showing a neat slight of hand to slice through the defence ten metres out and score the opening try of the match.

Halangahu added the extras from right in front to put the defending premiers out to a 10-nil lead.

Norths had it all to do and needed to score next to have any hope of victory, however it was again the Students doing the damage, Tom Carter scoring off a Luke Inman break in the 15th minute of the half.

15-nil became 22-nil soon after when Julian Huxley scored out wide, the fullback edging the Students closer to a bonus point.

The home side survived a blow in the 24th minute when replacement prop Laurie Weeks was yellow carded for a late shot on Norths skipper Robbie Miller, the Students shrugging off the setback to pick up a bonus point through a second Carter five pointer.

Uni's Tim Davidson received his side's second yellow card for the match shortly before full time, however the Students managed to hold out Norths at the death to record their third clean sheet in succession.

The result means Uni and Norths switch places on the ladder with three rounds left to play, with the Shoremen needing to win against Manly next week to avoid slipping out of the top four.

Parramatta has come back from the dead to down Eastwood at TG Millner Field, the Two Blues reversing a 29-8 half time deficit to run out 34-32 winners.

The loss is a major blow to Eastwood finals hopes, the only comfort for the two-time Tooheys New Cup champions being the two bonus points it took out of the match.

For Parramatta flanker Winney Paulo was again in the thick of the action, crossing for two tries.

A length of the field try after the bell to Chris Siale has seen Manly secure a vital bonus point in defeating Southern Districts 25-8 at Manly Oval.

The Marlins need to keep winning - and accruing bonus points - to remain in the hunt for the finals, Siale's touchdown doing just that after a double to Josh Mann-Rae and one to Gareth Inches had earlier gotten the home side in a winning position.

The only highlight on a tough day out for the Rebels was a try to their Wallaby front rower Nic Henderson.
